SIX BLACK AND WHITE 35MM PRINTS
EXHIBITED @ RED GALLERY, FITZROY - 20th JAN - 15th FEB 2010

Rohan was invited to exhibit photographs as part of a group exhibition held for Melbourne's Midsumma Festival in 2010. The exhibition program notes:

"Six black and white prints form Rohan Spong’s striking series Behind the Scenes. Inspired by Magnum photographers who famously shot behind-the-scenes stills of film sets, these images capture in moody mise en scene the transman as movie star and pin up. Shot on the set of Claire Henry’s filmic homage to Genet’s Un Chant d’Amour these works capture the actors/subjects in thoughtful contemplation. Like the co-founders of the Magnum movement from the late forties, Spong shares the desire to explore the human condition with absolute respect for his subjects."

Created as a work of research to accompany Rohan Spong's Honors Thesis about masculinities within film noir works, WHEN DARKNESS FALLS inverts the stock characters of Hollywood film noir, and sees a lesbian private detective Virginia Martin   (in mens attire) solving a serial murder case assisted by her alluring sidekick Betsy Sloane against a stylized noir New York.   As sexual tensions heighten and the body count multiplies. Virginia must decide where her loyalties lie and separate friend from foe.

This experimental short feature (58 minutes) featured guest performances by Natalie Bassingthwaighte (Neighbours, The Rogue Traders) and Katy Manning (Doctor Who, The Sarah Jane Adventures).

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS was rescreened several times by popular demand at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (2006).

WHEN DARKNESS FALLS also screened independently a further 12 times to sell out houses at Glitch Bar and Cinema in Sept and October 2006.
